Gray Maynard says simply winning "isn't enough" against Clay Guida at UFC on FX 4

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Gray_Maynard_180_2.jpg
Gray Maynard had two cracks at the UFC Lightweight Championship in 2011, but despite nearly stopping Frankie Edgar in each of the two fights, he came away without a win. That title still remains ingrained in his mind as he prepares for a bout with Clay Guida in the main event of Friday's UFC on FX 4 card in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

"My girl is pregnant and that changes your outlook in life," Maynard said this week in quotes released by the UFC. "I don't just want that belt for myself now, but to secure the future for my kid who's about to come into the world. Being a world champion and having big fights secures my kid's future."

"I've knocked the UFC world champion down five times and probably been as close to the title as you can get without actually holding it. I want to go one punch, one second, better next time. It was very frustrating not being able to get the win despite beating Edgar up, and it took a long time getting over it. But I'm back and I know I'm able to beat anyone in the division."

First up is Guida, who himself is coming off a loss against the man who now holds the belt in Benson Henderson. With Nate Diaz and Anthony Pettis also staking their claims for shots at the belt, the division is once again very crowded at the top. Maynard said he's now feeling that frustration others have now that he's not the one causing the hold up.

"There's a big traffic jam at the top of the lightweight division," Maynard said. "You've got Clay up there, Nate Diaz has been looked great, and there's Anthony Pettis plus Frankie is rematching with Ben Henderson in [August]. There's a big traffic jam in the division now – and now [that] it isn't me causing it I think it sucks!"

Now that he's not the one causing it, he knows he needs to have some major performances in order to get back into that mix. Indeed, he said a win alone on Friday night isn't going to be enough.

"Winning on Friday night against Guida isn't good enough," he said. "I know I've got to knock him out, make a statement, to make my case for a title shot. I know it's not likely I get another fight with Frankie so soon, but if Ben keeps the belt I think I make sense as No. 1 contender. I've already beat Diaz, but he's earned his spot at the top of the division, and I'd be happy to fight him for No. 1 spot anytime."

Penick's Analysis: Maynard's got a big hill to climb to get back to a title shot in the UFC again. Having two cracks in a row at the belt is rare enough; without winning either of them the UFC will be wary of rushing him back into another title fight regardless of who the Champion is at that point. He's going to need to impressively defeat Guida, then he's going to need to get another top opponent in his next bout after that. That's at least what he needs, and there may be even more required before he sees himself competing for that title. It all starts Friday, and he understands he needs something impressive against Guida.

UFC on FX 4's Clay Guida: "Running through Gray Maynard" key to getting title shot

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Clay_Guida_180_1.jpg
UFC lightweight Clay Guida has been a part of the UFC's roster for several years, but hasn't yet put together the wins to earn a shot at the UFC Lightweight Championship. As he enters his next biggest fight on Friday night against Gray Maynard on FX, what will it take to get him there?

"Running through Gray Maynard," Guida said in an interview with MMAWeekly.com. “He was the No. 1 contender for how long, probably two years. I had him No. 2 in the lightweight division all over the world for a couple years, and he had one of the wildest trilogies in MMA, let alone in the lightweight division with Frankie Edgar and he beat Frankie once, they had a draw, and he came up short on one fight.

"He's always up there. He's one of the only guys to have beaten Frankie besides Benson Henderson. That says a lot about my opponent and a win over him gets me right back in title contention I believe."

Friday's fight will be a five-round non-title main event, a factor that Guida believes benefits everyone, and he's expecting an excellent matchup from Maynard in Atlantic City.

"This is definitely tailor made for me," said Guida. "That's one thing when we asked for Gray Maynard, we asked for a five-round main event because we know it plays into our cards better. The fans win in this one; the UFC wins in this one."

Penick's Analysis: Guida needs a massive performance in this fight to get himself back into the veritable mix in the UFC's lightweight division. His loss to Benson Henderson last November is nothing to be ashamed of at all, and if he can turn around with a big win over a two-time title challenger, he'll absolutely keep himself in the conversation. It may take him a few fights still to get into a title fight itself, but this is as important a fight as he's had in his UFC career thus far.

UFC 147 Results: Rich Franklin survives Wanderlei Silva onslaught for decision win; Werdum stops Russow

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FranklinRich_150CG_10.jpg
For almost two minutes of a 25-minute fight in Belo Horizonte in Brazil on Saturday night, it looked like Wanderlei Silva might pull out a win over Rich Franklin. However, Franklin won most of the remaining 23 minutes of their UFC 147 bout, taking a unanimous decision four rounds to one in the night's main event.

Much of the fight consisted of Franklin popping in and out with strikes, pressing the action on Silva and avoiding the counter blows. However, Silva rocked Franklin in the second round and sent him to the canvas. Following up on the ground, Silva landed several big strikes and came very close to finishing the fight during the frame.

However, Franklin survived the onslaught, and Silva didn't have much to offer from there on out. The final three rounds all looked similar, with Franklin doing enough offensively to take the rounds while avoiding any of the limited strikes Silva was throwing his way. Silva finally tried to make a statement at the end of the fight, but it was too little, too late, and didn't win the round.

In other action on the night's card, Fabricio Werdum kept himself in the discussion as a possible title challenger at heavyweight, finishing Mike Russow in just over a couple of minutes, handing the American just his second career loss.

Werdum dropped Russow with an uppercut, then unleashed a series of strikes on the ground - many of which hit the back of the head. Ultimately, the assault was too much for Russow, and referee Herb Dean stopped the fight, giving Werdum his second straight win since returning to the UFC.

UFC on FX 4's Dan Miller feeling renewed in drop to welterweight division

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_93.jpg
Dan Miller returns to the Octagon on Friday night at UFC on FX 4 in his home state of New Jersey, his first fight since a loss to Rousimar Palhares last August at UFC 134. Miller's had an immensely tumultuous professional and personal life over the last several years, dealing with tragic loss and illness with his children while coming up short inside of the cage.

After the loss to Palhares, he decided to attempt a drop to the welterweight division, where he'll make his debut on Friday night. Heading into his fight with Ricardo Funch on the card, Miller is seeing some positive waves heading his way after a lot of negativity in recent years.

"Coming off of that fight [with Palhares] it was disappointing and everything and then the whole thing with [my son] Danny getting sick,” Miller said in an interview with MMAWeekly.com. "I almost felt burnt out. I wasn't sure what I was going to do but kind of making this change, and setting the goal of okay I'm going to go to 170 to try to make a run at this. I'm only getting older and my time is shortening with all these young kids coming in."

"I don't have that much time so I'm going to make a run for it and it's kind of renewed everything. I thoroughly enjoyed training going to boxing and Muay Thai and all that. I feel kind of renewed and everything, this is a whole new goal and this is a whole new chapter in my career."

The Miller family received support from fans, friends, fellow fighters, and more when news of his son's illness came to light. A foundation was set up in his honor, and UFC officials even pitched in to help pay for a kidney transplant, a procedure the young Miller will undergo soon. With that positive news, Miller is looking to move forward with this tough matchup.

"He's a tough kid and he's got very good skills; it's going to be a tough fight," Miller said. "I didn’t really know much about him when they said the name, but since then I've looked him up. I didn't really think much about it; they called with the fight and okay."

"I'm trying not to put any pressure on myself. I got enough pressure making the weight and I always go out looking for the finish. It's no different in this fight and I'm going out and looking to finish him in the first round. I don't want to go to the second round, and I want to get out of the ring as quick as I can and go have a beer and something to eat."

Penick's Analysis: It's impossible not to root for Miller. What he and his family have had to go through in the last several years has been tragic and mentally draining, and through it all he's still tried to compete with a very high level of competition. This move to the welterweight division may be just the move he needs to put a bigger string of success together inside the cage. A win on Friday would be nothing but positive, and could be a big way to kick off his 2012 run and to start a new era in his career.

MMA Marketplace: Rich Franklin’s not-awful UFC 147 Affliction walkout shirt

Among the companies who sponsor fighters and make MMA clothing, Affliction is at the bottom of the ladder. Its clothes are usually badly designed and overpriced, but with their shirt for Rich Franklin for UFC 147, they did alright.

It's a cool, aviator nod to his nickname "Ace," and though a skull is used, it's not overdone. It's still ridiculously overpriced at $57.95, but at least it's not ugly and overpriced.

UFC on FX 4's Clay Guida: "Running through Gray Maynard" key to getting title shot

Counter-Point: Maybe Gene LeBell Didn’t Make Steven Seagal Shit His Pants?

(Props: FilmDrunk) Legendary '70s rocker Steven Seagal was recently a guest on MMAFighting's "The MMA Hour," and after firing off some dependably insane nonsense about how Jon Jones doesn't punch or kick well, and how Anderson Silva "either fears me pretends to fear me," Seagal got into the only topic that we really care to hear him address at this point: Whether or not "Judo" Gene LeBell literally choked the shit out of him circa 1990. As you can imagine, Seagal is on the "no, I didn't shit my pants" side of the argument. Here's what he said, as transcribed by our buds at FilmDrunk: “I don’t even know if he is still alive. Is he still alive? I never knew this about him – either he is a pathological liar or he had somebody making up these stories. He came over to my trailer and I was with a guy called Conrad Palmisano who is still a legend, one of the greatest stunt co-ordinators in the history of Hollywood. [LeBell and I] were standing there talking about moves and stuff like that and we were just doing some stretching and he was showing me how you can stretch...he wanted to stretch my back and then I kind of flipped over the top of him and said ‘thank you for that.’ There was never any confrontation with him ever. In any way, shape or form. And I swear to god on my children – and they are the most precious thing in my life – if he is saying that he is a pathological scumbag liar. I keep answering that [question]. Either he made up this lie or someone made it up...Gene Le Bell has never even said anything impolite to me. When he has seen me he has been extremely polite to me and just acted like a friend. I think you know the truth here and everyone else knows the truth and if Gene is saying sh*t like that he should be ashamed of himself.

Whoops! Mike Pierce’s win UFC on FX 3 was actually unanimous

Though all eyes are on the Nevada Athletic Commission for mangling Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley's fight, Florida made a pretty big error of its own on Friday night. Mike Pierce beat Carlos Eduardo Rocha in a decision that was announced as a split.

Officials with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which oversees the Florida Boxing Commission, confirmed to MMAjunkie.com that judge Ric Bays, whose score was read as 30-27 for Rocha, had scored the fight in error.

"After the fight, Ric Bays informed the Commission that he scored the wrong corner and asked for a correction," said Sandi Poreda, the director of communications for the FDBPR. "As the other fight was starting, the commission changed it on the official record."

Heading into the bout with Rocha, Pierce had three straight split decisions. His loss to Josh Koscheck was tight enough for one judge to see it for Pierce, so you could see why another split decision when he earned the unanimous would upset him.

With this error, plus attendance of just 6,635, you can bet the UFC won't be visiting Florida again soon. They may have sunshine, Mickey Mouse and LeBron James, but they aren't the best hosts for fights.

Lorenzo Fertitta says UFC won't book Alistair Overeem until licensed by NSAC

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

OvereemAlistair_180_39.jpg
Alistair Overeem said on Monday that he will be back fighting this December, with a desire to go after the UFC Heavyweight Championship. However, unless the Nevada State Athletic Commission goes against their own ruling sometime this fall, Overeem will not be on a UFC card this year.

UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta said on Tuesday that the UFC will not be booking Overeem in any fights until he gets licensed by the NSAC once his nine-month denial expires. Considering his denial goes through December 27, the UFC will not be putting him on their year-end likely to take place on December 29.

"That's speculation," Fertitta said of Overeem's December ambitions in a comment made to ESPN.com. "It's in the NSAC's hands. [The UFC] can't be presumptuous."

As it stands, that approval cannot come until after December 27, so the UFC will not book him for any event until after that.

Penick's Analysis: It would take the NSAC holding some unprecedented hearing this fall to express an advance licensure of Overeem once December 27 hits in order for him to fight on December 29. I don't think we'll see that at all, so Overeem will be out until at least January. The most likely scenario we'll see for his return is a Super Bowl weekend headlining bout in Las Vegas. That may or may not be for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, but it's probably the likely return date for Overeem.

Maurico ‘Shogun’ Rua vs. Brandon Vera is the new main event for UFC on Fox 4

A shoulder injury to Brian Stann forced big changes for the UFC's next event on Fox. Now, instead of Stann facing former Bellator champ Hector Lombard, the main event will feature a light heavyweight match-up. Former champion Maurico "Shogun" Rua will take on Brandon Vera on Aug. 4 in Los Angeles.

Rua was supposed to fight Thiago Silva in July, but that bout was scrapped because of an injury to Silva. Vera was training for a fight with James Te Huna earlier in July, but Te Huna now needs a new opponent.

Lombard is opponentless. With the UFC so packed with fights over the summer, there aren't many healthy middleweights available to take on Lombard in his UFC debut. The UFC just had to juggle middleweights around to handle Vitor Belfort's injury and removal from the UFC 147 main event.

Who should Lombard face? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

UPDATE: Lombard will fight Tim Boetsch, who was available because Michael Bisping had to pull out of their UFC 149 bout with an injury. Lombard/Boetsch will take place at UFC 149.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua explains turning down Glover Teixeira, refutes UFC President Dana White's tale of events

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

RuaShogun_180_15.jpg
"They asked me to fight Glover, my manager told me and then I talked to my team and we decided not to fight Glover because he's a top guy but, but he's building a career in the UFC. He fought once and it was on an undercard, so it's not fair. I made it clear that it wasn't interesting for us now. But in a while it may happen, but not now... If I defeated him I wouldn't reach a level of having a chance at the title. He's a top guy, but he just got here and doesn't have a history in the UFC. Three, four fights from now it's possible, but not now. Dana White commented I rather leave UFC than fighting him but it was not true. UFC never thought about it neither did I. At any point I said I would leave in case I fought him. I just said it was not interesting right now and that's why we had our agreement. This conversation never happened."

-Mauricio "Shogun" Rua talks to Tatame.com about the saga regarding a bout with Glover Teixeira, and refutes UFC President Dana White's statement that he said he'd rather be cut than fight Teixeira.

Penick's Analysis: It's wholly possible that White was told one thing by someone representing Shogun, but that those words never left Shogun's mouth. It's also wholly possible that White was being less than truthful about the exchange. Regardless, it's been a messy little public spat back and forth, with the only result being Rua in a fight against Brandon Vera. Shogun's reasonings for not wanting the fight with Teixeira have been clear before he said them, and more than sensible. Teixeira's not on that level of recognition that makes a dangerous fight like that a winning proposition for Shogun, so it's not a fight he was necessarily obligated to take. Teixeira may likely be on that level in short order, but Rua wasn't going to let that be at his expense.

Shawn Bunch signs with Bellator, Joins AKA

Former Olympic hopeful Shawn Bunch has decided to move from the mat to the cage after losing out on a spot on the US Olympic team. Bunch, who was the favorite to represent the US in London, lost to former Oklahoma State Cowboy Coleman Scott at the "Beat the Streets" event in Times Square. Bellator officials confirmed earlier today.

Martin Kampmann and Michael Chiesa big winners at ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ finale

In his last fight, Martin Kampmann was beat up by Thiago Alves for an entire fight before coming back with a submission win. This time, he only needed two rounds to get a comeback win.

Jake Ellenberger clipped Kampmann off the bell of the first round. He knocked him down and then tried to follow up with a bevy of strikes. Kampmann held on for the rest of the round. In the second, Kampmann again appeared wobbled, but caught Ellenberger with a right. He then finished the fight with knees that ended the fight at 1:40 in the second.

UFC commentator Jon Anik hinted in the post-fight interview that a match-up with Johny Hendricks in a title eliminator is the next step for Kampmann.

Michael Chiesa won "The Ultimate Fighter" tonight with a rear naked choke that put Al Iaquinta to sleep at the TUF finale in Las Vegas on Friday night. Chiesa held off Iaquinta's attacks early on before getting the takedown. He took Iaquinta's back and wore him down until he could finally maneuver the choke into place. Iaquinta didn't tap; instead the fight was stopped when referee Herb Dean recognized that Iaquinta was asleep at 2:47 in the first.

It was an emotional win for Chiesa, whose father died the first week the younger Chiesa was at the TUF house.

"This is exactly what I wanted. There's no way I was going to sell myself short. I overcame a lot of things to win this fight," Chiesa said after the bout.

With the win, Chiesa gets a six-figure contract with the UFC, a Tapout sponsorship and a Harley-Davidson. Iaquinta can be comforted by the fact he won $50,000 before even stepping in the Octagon. He won bonuses for Knockout of the Season and Fight of the Season for his bout with Myles Jury, who won $25,000. Joe Proctor won $25,000 for the Submission of the Season.

Lawrence, Oliveira shine

The first fight on FX was an entertaining back and forth battle that featured John Cofer's wrestling facing off with Justin Lawrence's striking. In the third round, Lawrence quickly ended the seesaw of a fight with a kick to Cofer's jaw. It knocked Cofer straight to the canvas and gave Lawrence the knockout win 19 seconds into the third round.

Max Holloway used unrelenting body shots to take out Pat Schilling in a unanimous decision. Schilling struggled to find any offense and just took the beating that Holloway gave him. Whenever Schilling was on the ground, Holloway beckoned him to stand up to keep the fight on its feet. Holloway, the youngest fight in the UFC, won the bout 30-27 on all three judges cards.

Charles Oliveira again showed that featherweight is the correct weight class for him as he showed his jiu-jitsu prowess with a second-round submission of Jonathan Brookins. The first round was filled with both men getting in good shots, but Oliveira took over in the second. He weakened Brookins with ground and pound, then sunk in a modified guillotine to cause the tap at 2:42.

Anderson Silva is the greatest commercial actor of our time

It's possible UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is the greatest mixed martial artist in the sport's brief history. With a record of 31-4, a 15-fight win streak, wins at middleweight and light heavyweight and eight fight night bonuses, it's easy to make that case.

But what he might excel at even more is making commercials. Seriously, watch the above for a razor and tell me you don't want to buy it. His ads for Burger King and Budweiser were instant classics.

The man has some range. Whether you need a kick to the face or a reliable pitchman, Silva's your guy.

Barnburner Alert: Che Mills vs. Duane Ludwig Booked for UFC on FUEL 5

(Duane, how many times do I have to tell you to STOP SLEEPING ON THE JOB??!!!!) Well, well, well...it looks like the UFC has finally delivered a free card matchup that doesn't make us yearn for the days of Arlovski/Sylvia III. Word just broke (and by just, we mean a good six or seven hours ago) that veteran strikers Duane "Bang" Ludwig and Che Mills have been paired up for UFC on FUEL 5, which goes down on September 29, 2012 at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England and features a headlining matchup between heavyweight contenders Stefan Struve and Stipe Miocic. Mills broke the news via his Twitter: Mrefjb_medium After stringing together a pair of wins over Nick Osipczak and Amir Sodallah to save his UFC career, Ludwig again finds himself with his back against the wall. He has dropped his last two contests to Josh Neer (via Ambienotine) and Dan Hardy (via lead left hook of death) and could be looking at his final fight under the promotion if he is not successful against Mills.

In addition to a couple photos of that night courtesy of Pulitzer-winning TMZ, we're including a collection of some of our favorite Chuck Liddell partying photos from over the years. As you'll see, Chuck has gotten down with classy pairs of ladies, celebrities, more classy ladies, former opponents, douchebags, and piles of yet more comely finishing-school drop outs.
