Frankie Edgar will stay at 155 and seek rematch with Benson Henderson

Frankie Edgar walked into the Octagon this past Saturday with the UFC Lightweight title strapped around his waist. After a 25-minute battle with Benson Henderson he left the cage without that title as Henderson celebrated being crowned the new Lightweight Champion. Almost as soon as he fell to Henderson, Edgar was assailed by questions if he would drop to the Featherweight division to challenge Jose Aldo for his UFC title. Edgar deflected the questions, but today, on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, he let

You tell us: Who should Benson Henderson fight next?

Not long after Benson Henderson had the UFC lightweight belt fastened around his waist, questions arose about who he would fight next. UFC commentator Joe Rogan said at the end of the UFC 144 broadcast it would be Anthony Pettis. Frankie Edgar, who just lost his belt in a close fight, said he should get it. Nate Diaz and Jim Miller are fighting in May and the winner of that bout also has legitimate claim to a title shot. Who would you give it to?

Anthony Pettis: He is one of just two men to have beaten Henderson. Their WEC 53 bout, the last bout the WEC ever produced, was close until Pettis pulled out the "Showtime kick." There's no doubt they would produce another exciting bout.

On the other hand, does a split decision over Jeremy Stephens and a knockout of Joe Lauzon qualify you for a title shot? That's all Pettis has done since losing to Clay Guida, who lost to Henderson.

Frankie Edgar: Not only was his loss to Henderson a close decision even refuted by UFC president Dana White, but Edgar had to give immediate rematches twice while champ. Why shouldn't Henderson do the same?

On the other hand, it would tie up the belt with the same two fighters vying for it. Again. Ben Fowlkes from MMA Fighting pointed out that while not granting an immediate rematch to Edgar would be unfair to him, it would be extra fair to everyone else. Do you want to see Edgar in another rematch, or do you want to see someone else get a shot?

Winner of Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller: On May 5, the two will square off on the UFC's next Fox card. With both fighters floating near the top of the lightweight division, this bout has title eliminator written all over it.

On the other hand, Miller lost to Henderson in August. For Diaz, a win would give him his third straight, but his resume isn't more impressive than the other top lightweights.

Time for you to play matchmaker. Who would you give the next lightweight title shot to? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Thursday Fight Night: TUF 3 champ Kendall Grove alive, kicking and with a new attitude

Diego Sanchez fought his rear end off last night in losing to Jake Ellenberger. The lead in to the fight was very revealing as Sanchez admitted he hadn't taken all elements of his career seriously enough. He seemed apologetic.

Just like the Season 1 "Ultimate Fighter" champion, Kendall Grove knows he's made mistakes along the way too, but he's not about to say he's sorry.

The headstrong Grove, who won TUF 3, is back fighting tonight in Las Vegas with a smaller promotion. Grove is headlining Superior Cage Combat 4 at the Orleans Arena. It's a solid card dotted with several UFC veterans. He may not be in the biggest show in the world, but Grove is happy with where he's at in his career.

"UFC was good, no doubt. But when I wanted to fight more it was 'no wait, wait. We'll tell you when you can fight.'  It's more easier on my head," Grove told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. Don't get me wrong, I love competing with the best fighters in the world, but not all thebest fighters are in the UFC. There's other fighters out there."

Tonight, he faces another UFC veteran in Jay Silva (7-5, 0-2 UFC). He's looking for the finish. That's something he wasn't doing in his last few fights with the UFC.

"I kind of stalled in my UFC career ... just trying to survive and keep my job. I'm at the highest level, you don't want to go back down," said Grove. "That's where I messed up. I was just trying to survive."

Grove (14-9, 7-6 UFC) said in his mind he was a scrub and lucky to be there. His mindset has changed. He's fighting as often as possible. In fact the turnaround for this tilt was less than four weeks. Grove took out Japanese legend Ikuhisa Minowa back on Jan. 21 in Honolulu.

John Gunderson faces Justin Buchholz for the SCC lightweight title. TUF 13 alum Jamie Yager is also featured on the card. Two other UFC vets Terry Martin and Jesse Taylor were slated to square off, but the fight was canceled according to MMAWeekly.

SCC 4 weigh-in:
Kendall Grove (185) vs. Jay Silva (184) - Middleweight
John Gunderson (154.5) vs. Justin Buchholz (155) - Title fight
Danny Davis Jr. (170) vs. Jamie Yager (170) - Welterweight
Dominique Robinson (156) vs. Paulo Bananada (155) - Lightweight
Brandon Bender (145) vs. Shorty Weikel (144) -Bantamweight
Walt Harris (255) vs. Anthony Hamilton (265) - Heavyweight
Jimmy Jones (145) vs. Joao Victor (145) - Bantamweight

Dana White talks after UFC 137 "I Will Never Trust Nick Diaz Again" - Dana White

Nick Diaz was a no-show at the UFC 137 press conference in Las Vegas - just like he was a no-show at the press conference in Toronto the day before. Dana White decided enough is enough and axed him from the card, giving Carlos Condit the title shot in his place. In this interview with MMA:30's Dave Farra; Dana White talks about the trust lost, why he thinks he'll never heard from Diaz again, and touches on Overreem vs. Lesnar and the UFC's return to Japan. UFC 144 picks, Vegas-style: Who’s still betting Quinton Jackson?

As if the travel, near-silent crowd and incredibly early start weren't enough to factor into betting UFC 144, along comes the weight snafu of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The former UFC light heavyweight champ whiffed badly on making weight at 205 pounds.

He spoke about being injured in camp, not being able to do his roadwork and trying to cut over 21 pounds in the final days before the fight.

The severity of the injury is unknown. So is the location. One would have to guess Rampage is dealing with a leg issue. For a guy, who already lacks mobility that can't be a good thing against a wrestler like Ryan Bader. Is all of this enough to put you on Bader's side?

Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, Frank Trigg and myself picked the fights on "The MMA Insiders" show.

You can also bet the over/under on rounds in the Jackson-Bader fight. It's currently minus-165 to go over 2.5 rounds. The main event between UFC lightweight title holder Frank Edgar and Benson Henderson has risen between 15 and 20 cents with the steam on side of the champ.

UFC 144 betting odds:
Best plays in bold

Frank Edgar (-150) vs. Benson Henderson (+130) - Lightweight
Yushin Okami (-360) vs. Tim Boetsch (+300) - Middleweight
Bart Palaszewski (+150) vs. Hatsu Hioki (-170) - Featherweight
Ryan Bader (+180) vs. Quinton Jackson (-220) - Light heavyweight

Machida, Jackson or wait: What to do with Dan Henderson?

Dan Henderson appears to be a man with a world of options. Comfortable at both light heavyweight and middleweight, his winning streak and credentials in both Strikeforce and the UFC qualify him for a title shot. After his epic bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Henderson said he wanted to try for a title at whatever weight is first.

[Related: Y! Sports pound-for-pound rankings]

Unfortunately for Henderson, the light heavyweight belt will be contested in April, and the middleweight belt is up for grabs in June. He is involved in neither fight. The UFC's solution was to offer him Lyoto Machida, a former champ who most recently lost to Jon Jones in December.

"He doesn't want to fight Machida," [UFC president Dana] White said following Wednesday's UFC on FUEL event. "He doesn't want to wait. He's going to have to wait. Who does he want to fight? I don't know what to do with Dan. Dan's either going to have to wait for Jones or wait for Silva. Or fight somebody else."

Except, Henderson says he was never offered that bout. Via his Twitter account, Henderson disputed White's words.

Was never offered Machida. And even though he has lost 3 out of his last 4, I'm sure it would be entertaining.

Who to believe between the two? Though, as Henderson says, a bout with Machida could be interesting for fans to watch, it doesn't make any sense for Henderson. Dating back to when he held the belt, Machida has losses to Rua, Jones, and Quinton Jackson. His one win was over a retiring Randy Couture.

[Video: Watch Jon Jones get attacked by a police dog]

A win over Machida would get Henderson no closer to the title shot. MMA Fighting's Mike Chiappetta suggests that Henderson takes on the winner of next week's bout between Ryan Bader and Jackson. Though a win over Jackson would avenge a loss on Henderson's record, it could also jeopardize a chance to win a belt off Silva or Jones.

As much as it pains Henderson to sit idle, his best bet is to wait. What would you do in Henderson's shoes? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Highlights from UFC on Fuel for those of us who couldn’t watch

Since starting with Yahoo! Sports in September of 2008, I haven't missed a single UFC or Strikeforce event. There were a few I couldn't watch live, but I have DVRed or bought a replay of every pay-per-view, fight night, network event and Showtime show. Not missing any fights over the past three years is exactly what made Wednesday night so weird. I couldn't watch UFC on Fuel 1 because I don't have Fuel, and it's not likely that it will become available to me anytime soon. Did you have a similar experience?

Today, Fuel released highlights for those of us who couldn't watch, starting with Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez's Fight of the Night.

It was painful to miss such a good bout, as well as Stipe Miocic's Knockout of the Night.

The card was started off with Ivan Menjivar's Submission of the Night performance over John Albert.

UFC 144 weigh-in: ‘Rampage’ Jackson misses weight badly, Ryan Bader fight still on

Based on his condition when he stepped on the scale in Tokyo for the UFC 144 weigh-in, the rumors of Quinton Jackson having a lousy training camp were confirmed.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion missed the 205-pound limit by six pounds at 211.

The non-title fight will go on as planned with Jackson giving up 20 percent of his purse to Bader. Based on Jackson's salary from recent fights, that amount could be in the $50,000 range. Jackson was paid $250,000 in his fights at UFC 130 and UFC 135.

Even at 211, Jackson's face showed the wear of trying to make weight. He was also a little softer than normal in his chest. Both main event fighters, Frank Edgar and Benson Henderson, made weight for their UFC lightweight title fight at 154 pounds. Henderson, the much bigger fighter, was incredibly cut in the midsection.

Rich Franklin, serving as an analyst on Fuel TV, called Jackson's miss "ridiculous."

[ Kevin Iole: Benson Henderson's superhero mold may come in handy ]

During his interview with Fuel's Ariel Helwani, Jackson said he suffered an injury early in training camp and couldn't get in his roadwork. The injury, which Jackson would not disclose, was healed later in camp, but by then he was still very heavy. Jackson said he woke up at 3 a.m. local time to cut weight and he was only able to go from 232 down to 211.

Fukuda, Cariaso and Tamura start UFC 144 with wins

In the UFC's first trip to Japan since Zuffa bought the promotion, Riki Fukuda, Chris Cariaso and Issei Tamura were early winners at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Fukuda beats up Cantwell

Riki Fukuda dominated Steve Cantwell on the way to a 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 decision.

Fukuda got a takedown quickly in the first round and started throwing several big punches and elbows. Cantwell tried to grab an arm for a submission, but he couldn't do it. He finally returned to his feet to come on late in the round with kicks and a flying knee. In the second round. Cantwell defended a Fukuda takedown with a tight guillotine. As hard as Cantwell squeezed, Fukuda was still able to get out.

Fukuda took advantage of Cantwell's tiredness and landed several strike combinations. In the last 30 seconds of the round, Cantwell got a takedown and jumped on Fukuda's back. He fell off just before the horn sounded to end the round.

"My plan was to take him down more, but he had a very strong base.  I was in a car accident the last time so I had to take a break, but it was worth the wait and I would like to thank the UFC for giving me this opportunity," Fukuda said.

Cantwell again tried for a submission in the third round, but Fukuda came on late in the round to beat up Cantwell. An exhausted Cantwell tried to return strikes, but it was all Fukuda.

Cariaso takes close decision

Chris Cariaso took a tight decision over Takeya Mizugaki, winning 29-28 on all three judges' cards. Mizugaki dominated the first round with better striking, a takedown and submission defense. He fended off an omoplata attempt by Cariaso. Mizugaki returned to the clinch in the second round to fend off Cariaso's strikes. Mizugaki finally completed the takedown around the two-minute mark, but Cariaso stayed active on the bottom.

In the third round, Cariaso threw a high kick then slipped. Mizugaki took advantage of the fall and used it to control Cariaso on the ground. He was more active on top this time, trying to pass the guard, but it wasn't enough.

Tamura starts card with knockout

Issei Tamura made a memorable UFC debut, knocking out Tiequan Zhang in the first fight on the card.

In the first minute, each fighter took a turn knocking the other down before settling in for a grapple-heavy first round. The second round didn't last long, as Tamura landed a picture-perfect right hand and knocked Zhang right out. The fight was stopped at 0:32 in the second round.

ENNIS: Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down For UFC 144 - Epic Cards, Epic Fights, Poor Judging, and Much More

By: Shawn Ennis, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Staff06Ennis_130_20.jpg
UFC 144 as a whole gets a resounding thumbs up. I haven't combed completely through my mental inventory yet, but as of right now I can't think of a better MMA card that I've ever seen. But with the good, there is always some bad. So let's root out that bad and make it pay. I'll try to go in chronological order, but there are no guarantees here.

Thumbs Up: to the UFC for pulling off an epic card in Japan. That couldn't have been an easy thing to do, and they did it. Of course you can never guarantee quality, but they sold out the Saitama Super Arena and delivered a fantastic card to those who were curious what the UFC is all about.

Thumbs Down: to one statement in the opening montage. This is nitpicky, but it said the UFC is a global sport. The UFC isn't a global sport - it's a global promotion. MMA is a global sport. I'm just sayin (Look, I'm gonna have to stretch for some of these downs, okay?).

Thumbs Up: to perfect placement of nasty power. Both Issei Tamura and Anthony Pettis had incredible knockouts by landing perfect strikes. Pettis was especially impressive considering the opposition. Joe Lauzon hadn't been knocked out since Kenny Florian stopped him back in 2008. Since then he's been in there with guys like Jeremy Stephens and Melvin Guillard, both of whom are hard hitters, and he never wilted. Pettis completely starched him. Impressive things.

Thumbs Down: to bad judging. Takeya Mizugaki won his fight against Chris Cariaso, but somehow he didn't get the nod. Hatsu Hioki was given a score of 30-27 by one of the judges.  I don't know who this judge is, but he did not watch the second round of that fight. Judging continues to be an issue. What do you do about it on a promotional level, though? Pressure the athletic commissions? I don't know the solution to fixing it, but I hope someone figures it out.

Thumbs Up: to Riki Fukuda's relentless offense. Fukuda was active throughout the fight with Steve Cantwell when he could have easily cruised to a victory, especially in the third round. Fukuda looked great, which was partially due to how terrible Cantwell looked after his failed guillotine in the second round, but he definitely deserves credit for his performance.

Thumbs Down: to Cantwell's conditioning, or recovery, or whatever it is that causes him to go into zombie mode in seemingly every fight these days. You've got to give the guy credit for not being stopped, but he has just looked increasingly worse since coming back from his career-threatening injury last year. Oh, and apparently he's at his best when he's moving around and bouncing and such (according to Joe Rogan), which is weird because most guys are at their best when they stand in front of their opponents and eat punches and kicks.

Thumbs Down: to the death of the mystique of Kid Yamamoto. He was one of the most feared fighters in all of MMA in his prime, but he just doesn't have it anymore. The look on his face said it all after the fight. It was the look of a guy who was mad that he lost, which evolved into, "Whatever. I don't even care," during the post-fight interview. Yamamoto's last two opponents were brought in to lose to him, and both of them beat him definitively. Not a good sign for his future in the UFC, or really anywhere.

Thumbs Up: to the recovery of Takanori Gomi. Eiji Mitsuoka came in with a good gameplan and looked to be nullifying Gomi's offense in the first round on the way to very nearly submitting him at the end; but Gomi weathered, recovered, and got the knockout. That having been said, he's not going to win a ton of fights at this point with his hands at his sides and his chin four feet in front of his waist.

Thumbs Up: to colorful pen toppers and loveable translators! Seriously though, that's the most I've ever enjoyed watching a translator work. Which is to say it's the first time I've ever enjoyed watching a translator work. Does she speak Portugese?

Thumbs Up: to Showtime. I already mentioned it once earlier, but it deserves another line. That kick was flawless.

Thumbs Up: to Bart Palaszewski and Hatsu Hioki. If that was a number one contender fight, it was everything a contender fight should be. Hioki finally showed why he's ranked number two in the world in the weight class as he looked spectacular in the first round and then weathered a huge comeback from Bartimus in the second to dominate the third and take the win. I don't know if he can beat Jose Aldo, but I'm very interested to find out having seen that he's capable of bringing it in the Octagon.

Thumbs Up: to Yushin Okami and Tim Boetsch. Okami looked as good as he ever has for two rounds and was well on his way to winning a dominant decision over "The Barbarian." But that third round - wow. It was said several times on Twitter right after the fight, and it's absolutely true: That is how you fight when you're down two rounds going into the third. If more guys would lay it on the line like Boetsch did, we'd see far fewer fighters who are able to cruise to victory and put viewers to sleep in the third. Obviously fighting careful wasn't going to get the job done, and Boetsch didn't do that. Riki Fukuda showed how you fight when you're up two rounds, and Boetsch showed what you do when you're down. Just an incredible comeback.

Thumbs Down: to everything about the Jake Shields and Yoshihiro Akiyama fight. The only two good things about that fight were the throws by Akiyama and the decision being correct. Everything else was terrible. For years, every time I would watch Nick Diaz fight, I would wonder if his opponent had ever watched a Diaz fight before considering the way they would stand in front of him and allow him to tee off. Now I have to wonder the same about Akiyama. Do you want Shields on top of you? Of course not. But here's the thing: Akiyama's takedown defense is infinitely better than Shields' non-clinch takedowns. So why would he allow Shields to stand at a distance and pick him apart with his terrible, horrendous striking? Shields obviously wasn't hurting him, and he wasn't able to take him down, but Akiyama did close to nothing for the entire fight. I've seen a couple of people scoring the fight for Akiyama, which makes me think I need to rewatch it, because that just seems incomprehensible to me. There's definitely something to be said for more damaging offense counting for more than an accumulation of nothing strikes, but Akiyama didn't have enough offense for me on first viewing to even win a round.

Thumbs Up: to Mark Hunt winning three straight in the UFC in 2012. What? Seriously? If you said you saw this coming before Hunt debuted in the Octagon, or especially after he was tapped out easily by Sean McCorkle, you are a dirty liar. I like Hunt vs. Struve next. That is if Struve decides to come in smart and go for takedowns. If he doesn't I fear for his safety.

Thumbs Down: to Cheick Kongo not learning. When he fought Pat Barry, Barry had one way to win. Sure, Kongo ended up getting the comeback knockout, but he was        this close to being a victim. His best course in that fight was to take Barry down and beat him up. Fast-forward to this fight. Mark Hunt has one way to win. Kongo's best chance was to take him down and beat him up. So he decides to stand? I told you before the fight that Melvin Manhoef is the only one to knock out Mark Hunt, and I'm pretty sure he could knock out an elephant. Kongo has got power, but standing with Hunt, especially considering how the Barry fight went, was just not the smart move.

Thumbs Down: to most aspects of the Rampage-Bader fight. You have to give credit to Bader, who saw his path to victory and took it, but what was Rampage doing in there? I get that the guy wanted to fight in Japan, and that winning isn't everything to the Japanese fans, but he was clearly hobbled going into that fight. His knee didn't look right from the beginning, and it only got worse. Add that to the fact that he obviously wasn't able to get himself right when it came to conditioning, and we got what we got. Like I said, Rampage knows that winning isn't everything in Japan. But fighting to your full ability and giving it everything you've got? That's what the fans are looking for. And Rampage just didn't have the ability to do that last night. He knew that going in, and he shouldn't have fought. This isn't to disparage Bader. Like I said, he did what he had to do. But it's his bad luck that the fight looked more like bad Rampage than good Bader.

Thumbs Up: to epic title fights. Edgar is getting to the point where the only thing you can rely on is that his fight will be great. I had Henderson winning four rounds, but it was close enough that it'd be hard to argue 3-2 Henderson or even 3-2 Edgar. Really, really close fight. Altogether I thought Henderson's offense did more damage, and while Edgar did outland Henderson (by 10 strikes overall, which is basically even) this was a case to me of the more effective offense coming from the challenger. That being said, I need to re-watch the fight and see if I still think that. There's no doubting that Carlos Condit beat Nick Diaz (I had to throw that in there). Had Diaz won it would have been a robbery. This one isn't a robbery no matter who wins it.

Thumbs Down: to the incessant questioning of Frankie Edgar about dropping to featherweight. Let the guy do some thinking, for crying out loud. He said to Joe Rogan after the fight that this was no time to make a decision, and kudos to him for that. And then during the press conference he continues to get badgered? Come on. Maybe it's the right move in the end, but you know what? Maybe it's not. Who's to say that Edgar's advantages at lightweight don't get a lot narrower if he drops down? I don't know if that would be the case, and I imagine it wouldn't, but it's a valid question.

Thumbs Up: to the lightweight division. This place is crazy. I do like Anthony Pettis getting the next title shot, but that's more of a fan reaction than a reasoned analysis approach. If you strike while the iron is hot, you give the shot to Pettis and put it on Fox. That's the fight that people want to see, and it's almost guaranteed to be awesome. If you look at what's fair, it's hard to argue that giving Edgar an immediate rematch isn't the right call. The guy fought four title fights against two opponents. And now he has to get back in line? That sucks. At the same time, again from a fan perspective, I love the idea of Henderson-Pettis II and Edgar vs. the winner of Diaz-Miller (which will probably be Miller).

Thumbs Up: to an incredible night of fights. Let's just bring this full-circle and say again that it was one of the greatest nights in the history of the UFC. As I said in the roundtable, in my book we had a Fight of the Year candidate, two KO of the Year candidates, and a Comeback of the Year Candidate along with two probable number one contender fights. Even if the return to Japan was, as some have suggested, a vanity project for White and company, it was a raging success. As far as vanity projects go, this one was pretty successful.

UFC 144 Prelim Results: Vaughan Lee submits "Kid" Yamamoto in fantastic one round fight

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The near 11-year career of Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto may have come to an end in his home country at UFC 144 on Saturday night, as he suffered a submission loss for the first time in his career to England's Vaughan Lee.

The fight was a fantastically exciting back and forth fight, lasting just 4:29 seconds. Yamamoto nearly sent his fans home happy after rocking Lee early, but he was unable to finish things against the cage.

Then Lee came back and rocked Yamamoto twice, the second time ending with the two of them on the ground. Lee threw up for a triangle choke, then turned it into an armbar that forced Yamamoto to tap.

The loss was the fifth for Yamamoto in his last six fights, while Lee bounces back from a split decision loss to Chris Cariaso in his last fight to get his first UFC win.

Takeya Mizugaki Paid ‘Win Bonus’ Despite Loss at UFC 144

Do you remember in the movie White Men Can’t Jump when Gloria Clemente told Billy Hoyle, “Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win…”? Well, the latter scenario appears to be the case for featherweight Takeya Mizugaki (Pictured). Despite dropping a controversial (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) unanimous decision loss [...]

Rampage Jackson explains missed weight, hits back at Rich Franklin's comments on Fuel TV

Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson came overweight at the official UFC 144 weigh-in, hitting the scale 211lbs (5lbs over). Rampage will have to forfeit 20% of his fighting purse to Ryan Bader, who will look to add insult to injury by defeating Jackson in tonight's co-main event. Jackson revealed he had a number of injuries during his training camp for UFC 144, and was unable to cut the required amount of weight. Rampage refused to reveal his "walk around" weight, but still

UFC 144 Results: Jake Shields bounces back from consecutive losses, takes decision from Yoshihiro Akiyama

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jake Shields wasn't able to implement his dominant skillset against Yoshihiro Akiyama on Saturday night at UFC 144, but he did manage to out-strike him en route to taking a unanimous decision win in Japan.

Akiyama dropped to welterweight for the first time, and while he was able to stop almost all of Shields' takedown attempts, he found himself on the losing end of the proceedings as Shields stayed busy throughout the three round fight. Akiyama had two beautiful trips/throws in the fight, but couldn't keep Shields down and didn't do a lot offensively.

Shields finally took Akiyama down in the final minute, but only after Akiyama grabbed the fence twice to stop him earlier. He nearly finished things with a rear naked choke, but time ran out. The win bounced him back from two straight losses in 2011, while Akiyama has now lost four straight inside the Octagon.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Fights for ‘Mayhem,’ Evan Dunham and Eddie Alvarez

Though MMA's spring schedule is not as dizzying as its winter pace, there are plenty of fight cards that need filling. To that end:

-- Jason "Mayhem" Miller will take on C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146 on Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. This is Miller's first fight since losing the Michael Bisping at "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14 finale. Dollaway has been finished in his last two bouts, a TKO to Jared Hamman and a KO to Mark Munoz.

-- Evan Dunham and Edson Barboza will also meet at UFC 146. Dunham just fought at UFC on Fox 2, scoring a win over Nik Lentz. Known for his powerful striking, Barboza has never lost. His knockout of Terry Etim at UFC 142 was called one of the best knockouts in UFC history.

-- In Bellator, Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki are expected to meet in April. Alvarez was submitted by an Aoki heel hook in 2008. After that loss, he won seven straight before losing a classic title bout to Michael Chandler. Aoki is currently holds the DREAM lightweight belt.

Who will win these bouts? Talk to us in the comments, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

UFC on FUEL TV 1 weigh-in: Sanchez looks healthy at 170 pounds

Diego Sanchez was the man to watch during today's UFC on FUEL 1 weigh-in.

In this ever evolving sport, welterweights are getting bigger and bigger. At 5-foot-9 Sanchez is small for the weight. He looked bloated on fight night for his battle last March against Martin Kampmann. This afternoon, he looked much healthier.

Sanchez explained to USA Today that he screwed up the weight cut before the Kampmann fight.

The last fight for Martin Kampmann, I really messed up on the diet. I didn't cut out salt. I didn't cut out carbs. I ended up having to cut 14 pounds the day of the weigh-ins. That's three hours of cardio and another 30 minutes in the sauna.

Sanchez said it cost him late in the fight when he couldn't pour it on.

I felt it in the fight, and even though I still was able to fight hard and put a hard pace, if I would have done the weight cut properly, I would have been able to press the fight even harder in the second and third rounds and, I believe, finished the fight.

So there's no excuses for Sanchez and that means a victory for Jake Ellenberger is worth that much more.
