Anthony Njokuani vs. Paul Taylor on for UFC on Fuel 4

Just days after defeating an overweight John Makdessi by unanimous decision at UFC 145, Anthony Njokuani has been given another opponent. The 32-year-old Nigeria native will be taking on British scrapper Paul Taylor at the impending UFC on Fuel 4 fight card, which is expected to take place on July 11 in San Jose, California.

Rashad Evans expects eventual chance at redemption against Jon Jones

Last night former UFC champion Rashad Evans became the latest high-level fighter to fail at solving the puzzle current title-holder Jon Jones presents inside the Octagon. Evans, who landed a few solid shots, absorbed a good deal of damage throughout the five-round affair including some of the stiffest standing elbows ever witnessed in the sport. [...]

Chael Sonnen Weighs in on CagePotato.com Caption Fiasco [VIDEO]

(Props: MMAInsideTheCageTV. The quote in question comes around the 6:20 mark.) Our buds at MMA Inside the Cage caught up with #1 UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen following his pre-UFC 145 Q&A in Atlanta last week, and got his take on a number of hot topics, including the ongoing Alistair Overeem saga and his upcoming fight with Anderson Silva. Because Cyrus Fees is a thorough and incisive journalist, he asked the Voice of Reason author to weigh in on the recent CagePotato caption that completely blew up in our faces. As Chael put it: "These guys, in my belief, meant it as a joke. What was in their heart, only they know. I believe they meant that as a joke. HOWEVER...you've gotta understand that the headquarters is in Las Vegas, which is the gambling capital of the world. The owners of the UFC own casinos, this is extremely against the rules to do something like that, and you just can't even joke about it. So for Dana to get really upset — you really need to understand the history that's involved, and once you do that, I think the guys should have just laid down and said 'we screwed up.' I think their apology was a little bit weak, and Dana's only human. You give him a good solid response, no matter how wrong you are, you give him a good solid, 'man I screwed this one up', that's the end of it. But if you start shufflin' around, and you start getting squirmy, you're gonna have problems with him." Is it any surprise that Sonnen's answer was fair and balanced? After the jump: The latest episode of MMA Inside the Cage ("#91: Atlanta Aftermath"), which includes recaps and exclusive interviews from last weekend's UFC and Bellator shows, a batch of ugly knockouts, and a wild scrap from EFC Africa.

ASK THE TORCH: Amadi Answers reader questions on Condit-GSP entertainment level, Interim Titles, Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones

By: Jason Amadi, MMATorch Columnist

Staff10Amadi_130_52.jpg
Dionicio writes: I have a question regarding the future match between George St-Pierre and Carlos Condit. These two were exciting fighters making their way to the belt. However when they got a taste of that gold they became technical bores. I am a big fan of ground work and technique but these guys, with the help of Greg Jackson, have me thinking that Carlos "The Natural Born Killer" Condit vs. George "No-rush" (I should petition this) St-Pierre should be labeled "the most technically boring fight to come." I know there may be disagreements but tell me it's not true?

A: It's not true. As a matter of fact, not only is it not true, but it saddens me that people even take this stance against athletes fighting to win.

First of all, Carlos Condit is one of, if not the most consistently entertaining fighters in mixed martial arts. It blows my mind that a fighter like him can spend ten years of his life finishing fighters left and right, go the distance just twice and still be written off as a "technical bore."

Heading into the Nick Diaz fight, most people figured Condit would lose because on paper his usual unbelievably aggressive style would play right into Diaz's hands. Condit and his team put together a style to counter Diaz's pressure fighting tactics and they got vilified for it; I think that's ridiculous.

The fact is there are some fighters that you just can't beat in an entertaining fashion and Nick Diaz is one of them. Knocking Nick Diaz out is more or less off the table, so aggressively pursuing that type of finish is mostly a fruitless endeavor. The Diaz brothers routinely set records with the amount of punches they land in fights so standing in the pocket and trying to outland them there is obviously a mistake too. Nick Diaz is probably a better grappler than Carlos Condit, so he probably wasn't going to win there either.

Really, if Condit were to fight Diaz the way he usually fights, he would have lost. And the thing about it is, fans wouldn't respect him for that. We saw Donald Cerrone try to push the pace against Nick Diaz last December, and he got hacked apart for his troubles.

Did anyone praise Cerrone for being exciting? No. People ridiculed him for playing right into Diaz's hands and threw the whole Jackson's MMA team under the bus for coming in with such a piss poor gameplan.

As far as Georges St-Pierre goes, people need to let go of the idea that GSP was ever some sort balls to the wall striker who aggressively pursued knockouts; the guy won his UFC debut by wrestling Karo Parisyan to the ground and grappling him en route to a three round decision.

I'm not going to lie and say that St-Pierre hasn't become a bit risk averse over the years, but he's also not the absolute worst fighter in the word to watch either.

Whenever Condit and St-Pierre meet, I expect GSP to look to get the fight to the floor as often as he can and I expect Condit to try to look to fly through the air and knock St-Pierre unconscious whenever he can. If Carlos Condit comes out looking to point fight with St-Pierre, he'd be playing into his GSP's strengths and he'd probably lose.

Elvin writes: Why was Dana White so quick to create an interim belt for the welterweight division but balked at the idea for an interim Light Heavyweight belt when Shogun was out for a year plus?

A: First of all, Shogun wasn't out for a year plus; he wasn't even out for a year. Rua won the UFC Light Heavyweight Title on May 8, 2010 and then next fought on March 19, 2011.

Georges St-Pierre suffered a knee injury that stopped him from defending his title last October and then another injury that prevented him from fighting last February. For a while it was doubtful GSP would even be able to compete in 2012. It's already been over a year since GSP's last title defense and if he has any sort of setback in his recovery, it could be even longer before we see him in the Octagon.

GSP was out for so long and there were so many contenders that it actually made sense for the UFC to create an interim championship. Well at least it did before Condit decided not fight again until St-Pierre returned.

Back in 2010, Rashad Evans was the clear number one contender and there weren't even any other obvious contenders to fight him for an interim championship.

Yanni writes: I'd love your opinion on Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones at 205lbs (assuming the fight to take place tomorrow, with both fighters uninjured).

A: Anderson Silva is probably the best MMA fighter we've seen to this point, but Jon Jones would be a horrible style match up for him; he just has too many physical advantages, including being 13 years Silva's junior.

As great as Anderson Silva is, if Jones is overwhelming and physically dominating light heavyweights, why do people think bringing in middleweights is the answer? At the end of the day, even the greatest middleweight of all time is still just a middleweight.

Rashad Evans’ busted eye and Mac Danzig’s busted ankle are your pictures of the day

Those short elbows that Jon Jones used on Rashad Evans, and the heel hook Efrain Escudero used on Mac Danzig did some damage. Evans tweeted a picture of his eye the day after the fight. Danzig, who managed to win his bout even though his ankle was swollen and ugly, showed how it was still bruised and swollen. He plans to get an MRI later this week to see what damage was caused at UFC 146. It's just another reminder that fighters' jobs are not like ours, unless your job involves laughing off injuries on a daily basis.

Bellator's Bjorn Rebney confirms Hector Lombard headed to the UFC

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Hector_Lombard_180_2.jpg
Bellator Fighting Championships no longer has a Middleweight Champion, as Hector Lombard is on his way to the UFC.

Lombard's contract with the organization expired earlier this year, and he entered a matching period where he could field offers elsewhere, with Bellator retaining the right to match any deal offered. Lombard received a contract offer from the UFC last week, and Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney on Tuesday revealed that they have opted not to match the deal.

Ultimately, it came down to the different business policies between the two companies, as Bellator could not contend with what the UFC was offering.

"We have a business model where we make decisions based on analyzing data," Rebney said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "Since the first day we came into being, we made decisions based on real models, not hypotheticals. The UFC model is largely based on pay-per-view, and the offer they made to Hector is going to be monetized via pay-per-view. While pay-per-view could play a role in our future, today it doesn't. So, we did our due diligence to review the UFC contract, analyze in terms of charging our audience to see Hector vs. putting him on free TV, and we decided to allow the UFC to sign Hector, where I am extremely confident he will win the UFC middleweight title on pay-per-view."

Rebney doesn't begrudge Lombard continuing his career elsewhere, and holds a lot of respect for one of the very first fighters he signed for Bellator.

"He was a great fighter here, and there's no doubt in my mind he'll be a great fighter when he goes to the UFC," Rebney said. "I've said for a long time he's the best middleweight in the world, and I think he'll win the UFC title in short order."

Penick's Analysis: Lombard's going to make a great addition to the UFC's middleweight roster, and we'll finally find out just how good he is. It's hard to assert your dominance or effectively showcase your skills against fighters that aren't close to your level, and that's the inherent problem facing the best of the best outside of the UFC. Now he'll get a chance to showcase just who he is and just how good he can be when he faces some of the best in the Octagon.

ROUNDTABLE: How long will Jon Jones remain at light heavyweight? Can anyone at 205 lbs. dethrone him?

JonesJones_180_36.jpg
How long do you believe Jon Jones will stay at light heavyweight? And is there anyone in the division that can dethrone him?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Nothing against the questioner, but I hate the questions where we have to get into the mind of another person and try to guess how they're going to react or act, ya know? The best I can do is to answer what action makes the most sense to me if I were in his place, not that I have any idea how I'd react if I were living someone else's life. So, with that gigantic disclaimer out of the way...

I think Jones would stay at 205 if there were enough legitimate competition for him there. I think he fights Henderson this summer and fights Alexander Gustafsson around the end of 2012, and come 2013 he moves up.

Henderson has a chance to beat him, Gustafsson has a chance to beat him, but those chances are exceedingly slim. If you think Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson had a problem getting inside on Jones, wait until Dan Henderson and his measly 71" reach try to get inside. He might know ahead of time that he has to clinch with Jones, but how is he going to get there? His fight with Jones will feature the biggest reach disadvantage in the history of the UFC, at least modern era UFC. And lest we forget, it's not like Henderson, despite his wrestling background, has the world's best takedown defense. As long as Jones avoids the massive right hand of Dan Henderson, he will have his way with the plodding legend, even more than he did with Evans or Jackson.

As to Gustafsson's chances...

So, yeah.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I'll answer the second question first. No, I don't think anyone in the division can dethrone him right now, but those are the key words. As things stand now, no one is really close to beating Jones. In the future that may change, but Jones is above everyone else right now. As for the first question, I think Jones stays at light heavyweight for at least the next few years. He might dabble in the heavyweight division, but I think that won't be for a few years.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Jon Jones may flirt with other divisions as Anderson Silva did, but I believe he'll stick with light heavyweight. As far as him being dethroned, I believe there is now enough tape on him for someone out there to see what needs to be done to take him out. Dan Henderson has the next shot, and I think he has a good chance. I don't understand why a wrestler like Rashad Evans was afraid of taking Jones down, when in reality, that's your major strength. Henderson should be able to see that. I think Jones will find his match in Henderson.

BRAD WALKER, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

How long he remains at light heavyweight is directly linked to how long they can give him legit contenders in his weight class. Next up is Hendo and after that presumably Gustafsson, beyond them who is left that can really hang with Jones? No one. Once he finishes off this year if he still has the title I imagine he will make the leap to heavyweight. I don't know how he will fare against such incredibly huge and talented guys but it will be a fun transition to watch. The only threat to Jones in the division right now is Dan Henderson's right hand, if that doesn't end his reign, nothing will.

MIKE BACIOR, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I would like to think the Jones can become the Anderson Silva of 205. The reality is that he should stay for a long time, but if fights were already decided why get in the cage? Anything can happen and he could last three more months, or three more years.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I think Jon Jones will stay at light heavyweight as long as the UFC does not pressure him to move up. He will remain the champ at light heavyweight for a long, long time if he is allowed to stay there. He is such a freak of nature, I do not see anyone being able to figure out his length and unorthodox striking and grappling styles in the near future. He could easily move up to heavyweight immediately and challenge for that belt as well.

ALVIN CARTER, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

I think Jon Jones can hold that title until Anderson Silva moves up to take it. The question is will Jones be at heavyweight by the time that becomes more of a reality. Dan Henderson has a chance with his H-Bomb and his wrestling will factor in even if it is just a nullifier. After Jones vs. Henderson, I can only see rematches or someone like Alexander Gustaffson if he can make an impressive leap in competition and win in dominant fashion.

GRIFFIN MARSH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I feel jones should stay in the LHW division. The only man that could dethrone him at LHW is Anderson Silva, but that's a fight we will never see. Both fighters have shown no interest in fighting the other and Jones has openly stated he would love Anderson to be his mentor. Jones has one fight left, a 40+ Hendo who recently walked out of the cage exhausted after winning a very controversial five round decision against Shogun. I'll go ahead and say it. Hendo has no chance at beating Jonny Bones. With Dan's age and cardio I don't see it going past the third. I believe the man that beats Jon at 205 is about 15 right now. After pounding Hendo fans will scream for a move to Heavyweight, which I'm not so sure is a great idea. Heavyweight is a whole new ball game. The reach advantage will diminish, his physicality will be matched by guys like JDS & Cain Velasquez. So in my opinion I think he should stay at LHW, get paid and paid, and then retire the greatest LHW of all time and pound for pound one of the greatest. I just don't see any LHW's beating Jones any time soon.

DAN MOORE, MMATORCH UK CONTRIBUTOR

In just over one calendar year, the guy has beaten four of the most renowned fighters in the entire organization. Some will say Dan Henderson has a slim chance if he's tactically astute, and manages to land a right hander to test Jones ability to take a punch. However I don't believe for one minute that Henderson will actually do just that. I personally wouldn't be adverse to seeing Jones have another fight with Rashad Evans. It wasn't a complete annihilation on Saturday night and the story behind their first fight, adds credibility to the possibility of a rematch. If you give Henderson and Evans the next two fights, it also allows Alexander Gustafsson more time to develop, rather than throw him in, long before he's actually ready. In my world Jones beats Henderson, Evans and Gustafsson by summer 2013, before moving up to Heavyweight in early 2014.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

The goal of all active competitors is to make as much money as they can and to go down as an all-time great. Jon Jones is making tons of money and only stands to make more. With every passing fight, "Bones" Jones seems to take another step towards all-time great light heavyweight status. Why should he make radical changes to a formula that's working so well?

No one can ever imagine a dominant athlete like Jon Jones losing until they do; and then that's all anyone can think about. With Jones reportedly on the cusp of getting major sponsorships from Nike, Coca-Cola and companies like that, he can't afford to lose a fight.

The fact is Jon Jones should batter everyone he can at light heavyweight as many times as he can before moving up to heavyweight. There's a big difference between the greatest light heavyweight of all time finally meeting his match at heavyweight and a flash in the pan 205'er getting smashed trying to step to a heavyweight.

CHRIS PARK, MMATORCH UK SPECIALIST

When Lyoto Machida took the Light Heavyweight Title from Rashad Evans a few years back, it was said we were entering "The Era of The Dragon."

After dominating and then knocking Evans unconscious, without appearing to break sweat, it was difficult to see who from the top five of the division could trouble the Brazilian.

Jon Jones was an up and comer at the time, the long-term hope, and after showing great promise in his first year as a UFC fighter, Jones has since gone from strength to strength rising far above any of his weight class rivals.

The problem the division has now is who can take the title from him? There is no Rory MacDonald, no Michael McDonald, and there is no new Jon Jones on the horizon at 205, so one would be forgiven to think that two routine defences against Dan Henderson and Alexander Gustafsson could be the last two opponents he faces before moving up to challenge the big boys of the UFC.

The cold hard fact is we have seen the meteoric rise, the title win, multiple defences and now we are one fight - maybe two - from seeing the light heavyweight division cleaned out like it never has been before. @MMATorchUK

Eduardo Dantas and Alexander Gustafsson were the best of the weekend’s warriors

Eduardo Dantas leads off this week's edition of Weekend Warriors, your Monday morning look at the weekend's MMA. "Dudu" was the star of Bellator's show on Friday, choking Zach Makovsky unconscious in the second round of their title bout. With that win, Dantas became the new Bellator bantamweight champ and one of the hottest lighter weight prospects in MMA.

Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira both won their bantamweight semifinal tournament matches with unanimous decisions as they vie for the chance to face off with Dantas. In the featherweight tournament, an emotional Daniel Straus pummeled Mike Corey on the way to a unanimous decision win to earn a spot in the tourney final. Straus' training partner was killed in a car accident just a week ago. Staus will face Marlon Sandro for the featherweight tournament championship on May 11.

Gustafsson impresses in Sweden at UFC on Fuel 2

Alexander Gustafsson cemented his role as a top contender in the light heavyweight division with a convincing decision over Thiago Silva on Saturday. Brian Stann got back to his winning ways with a gentlemanly knockout of Alessio Sakara, and Dennis Siver got his first win at featherweight with a decision over Diego Nunes.

In his UFC debut Siyar Bahadurzada took home a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his 42-second KO of Paulo Thiago. John Maguire earned a Submission of the Night bonus for his armbar of Damarques Johnson. Brad Pickett and Damacio Page were given Fight of the Night honors for the back-and-forth battle that ended with Pickett finishing Page with a second-round rear naked choke.

On "The Ultimate Fighter," Joe Proctor, a protege of UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon, helped Urijah Faber's team take the lead. Proctor took out Chris Tickle with a first-round rear naked choke. John Cofer from Team Faber will face Team Cruz's Vinc Pichel.

UFC Champ Georges St-Pierre urges fellow fighters to be more professional

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GSP_WK150_16.jpg
A statement from Anehueser-Busch this week regarding several ill-advised comments made by fighters and UFC personalities has brought a lot of heat on the organization from several advertising trade publications.

The idea that the UFC needs to do a better job policing themselves is not lost on them, and they responded this week that they're continually trying to educate their fighters to be more professional in the public eye. Now, a man considered to be the epitome of professionalism in the sport is urging his fellow fighters to follow suit.

"This is something that I've been doing since the beginning of my career," UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "I wore a suit at press conferences when all the other fighters were making fun of me. (They said), 'Oh, look at St-Pierre, he doesn't wear his sponsor.' I'm the one who first started doing this stuff, and I think the image and how you conduct yourself ... because the sponsor, the big companies in corporate America, they're not interested in sponsoring an athlete who is good in his sport but acts like an idiot outside of the Octagon. They want someone who performs well, of course, but acts like a gentleman outside of the Octagon.

"I understood that more than ten years ago. That's why I behave the way I do and I do things that I do. That's why I have a lot of sponsors. I do have a lot of sponsors and a lot of money because of this. It brings money to the table."

St-Pierre maintains that the way he's carried himself to this point in his career - in all facets of the sport - is what has allowed him to become one of the highest paid athletes in all of MMA. If more fighters followed that example, he believes, they'd get more of those opportunities as well. Still, the fact that it hasn't caught on for tons of fighters is a concerning fact for St-Pierre.

"I'm in this business because I want to make it for a living, for money," St-Pierre said. "People don't understand that. They used to make fun of me. Now ten years after, now they start picking up on it. It's sad to see that it takes a long time for them to understand."

Penick's Analysis: Not every fighter is going to be on St-Pierre's wavelength here; then again, not every fighter's going to make the type of money he's made in his career either. It takes all types in all walks of life, but St-Pierre's not wrong about the way he carries himself as compared to his fellow fighters. Some have begun following his lead over the last several years, but again, not every fighter is wired that way. Hopefully the UFC can crack down as much as possible on the type of negative comments that have raised the profile on this issue, but it may not be something they can ever fully get a handle on.

Nick Diaz files suit against Nevada State Athletic Commission, alleges violation of due process rights

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DiazNick_GG180_21.jpg
The back and forth between Nick Diaz and the Nevada State Athletic Commission is continuing this week, as Diaz's attorney has filed a lawsuit against the commission on his behalf after they did not hear his case at their latest meeting on Tuesday. News of the lawsuit was first reported by Luke Thomas at MMAFighting.com.

Diaz's attorney, Ross Goodman, issued a demand to the NSAC to have Diaz's case heard on the April 24 meeting or forfeit the complaint on the basis of a statute that said a hearing must be held for final determination of a summary suspension within 45 days of its issuance. The attorney general responded that the statute Goodman cited did not apply in this case, alleged that they were still awaiting Diaz's medical marijuana card and other medical documentation, and then the case was not put on the April 24 docket.

However, in the lawsuit filed Tuesday, Goodman stated that they have provided the sufficient documentation with the NSAC, including proof of his eligibility for medical marijuana. Additionally, Goodman addressed both statutes that the attorney general broached, stating that "Under NRS 467.117(l) a summary or temporary suspension may be made only where 'the action is “necessary to protect the public welfare and the best interests of the sports regulated.' The NSAC has made no finding that a summary or temporary suspension of Diaz’s license is necessary to protect the public welfare."

With over two months having passed since Diaz was first issued a temporary suspension, Goodman also accuses the NSAC of denying Diaz his right to due process, and they're seeking further damages based on that violation. As to the temporary suspension itself, Goodman alleged that the NSAC did not comply with their own regulations in moving forward with a summary suspension in February.

Per the suit:

"Under NRS 467.113(4), in connection with the adjudication rendered at any such disciplinary hearing, the NSAC “shall file a written report of its findings, adjudication and order in the record of the proceedings and send a copy to the accused”.

32. In connection with the February 22, 2012 NSAC meeting:
a) The NSAC has filed no written report in connection with its findings (if any);
b) The NSAC has filed no written report in connection with its adjudication of the request for a continuation of the suspension; and
c) the NSAC has filed no written report of its order effecting a continuation of the suspension of Diaz’s license pending final determination of the Complaint.

33. Accordingly, (i) the NSAC has not complied with the requirements of NRS 467 in connection with February 22, 2012 meeting. By virtue of such failure of compliance, the February 22, 2012 meeting was wholly ineffective to continue the Summary Suspension.

The lawsuit isn't broaching any of the issues in regards to Diaz's positive drug test for marijuana metabolites, instead going after the system itself and demanding a stay of the summary suspension against him. Additionally, Diaz stated in a written affidavit that he'd be ready to fight "immediately" if the court rules in his favor. With a potential rematch with Carlos Condit likely to be made early this summer, Diaz is hoping to get back into the cage, despite stating his desire to retire following the judges' decision in February.

The case will be heard on Monday, May 14, and his suspension may be lifted should the court rule in his favor.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very interesting approach that Diaz and Goodman are taking, and it could have a ripple effect on how the NSAC is able to conduct their disciplinary hearings. Diaz and Goodman have contested from the beginning that the NSAC had any right to issue a suspension to Diaz based on the rules and regulations they abide by, and considering the case has not yet been heard they obviously feel the commission is not taking their arguments to heart. Whether they have a real case here or not to get the suspension lifted is for the court to decide, but with the delays they've faced already they're now hoping to get the entire process expedited. At the very least, they've kept things interesting, and we'll see how the NSAC responds to this one.

Jose Aldo expected to meet Erik Koch in next title defense at UFC 147 or UFC 149

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jose_Aldo_180_8.jpg
UFC Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo may have his opponent for UFC 147 in Brazil, or UFC 149 in Calgary, as MMAWeekly.com reports that he'll take on Duke Roufus product Erik Koch in his next Title defense.

With the booking of Hatsu Hioki vs. Ricardo Lamas today, as well as the upcoming featherweight main event between Dustin Poirier and "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung at UFC on Fuel 3, Koch was the top unbooked featherweight, and many expected this bout to be made.

Roufus told MMATorch Columnist Rich Hansen earlier this month that Koch was more than willing to take the fight against Aldo, and it appears that's just what he'll get.

The 23-year-old Koch holds a 13-1 record, with his sole loss coming against Aldo's last challenger, Chad Mendes, by decision in the WEC. Since then, he's won four straight, including two in the Octagon. After knocking out Raphael Assuncao in his UFC debut last March, he defeated Ultimate Fighter 12 winner Jonathan Brookins last September. An injury took him out of a bout with Poirier in February, but now he'll leap into his title opportunity in his return from injury.

The bout will take place either in June in Brazil, or as planned at UFC 149 in Calgary. A determination and announcement on that front is expected shortly.

Penick's Analysis: This is a huge opportunity for Koch, and with everyone else booked he's definitely the right option here for the title fight. At 23, a loss to the best in the world will only be a minor career setback, and he absolutely has the skills to pull off the upset and become one of the youngest champions in UFC history himself. It should be a great title fight in the 145 lb. division, and whether it takes place in June in Brazil or July in Calgary it will be a really entertaining fight.

UltimateBall mixes MMA, soccer, rugby, basketball and a dash of awesome

Did you ever watch soccer and think, "This really needs some takedowns?" Or rugby and think, "Why isn't this played in a cage?" Or basketball and think, "An armbar would have been perfect right there?" Good news. The people from Ultimate Challenge MMA came up with Ultimate Ball.

Watch the first minute to get an idea of the newest game that will clearly take the world by storm. Watch the entire video to get a good laugh in as the announcers don't even understand what's going on as they ask, "What's the score?" in the final minute.

UCMMA has big hopes for UltimateBall, as the description on the YouTube video suggests:

In 1993 they said that UFC will never take off, look at it now, UltimateBall is the sport of the future, this isn't just an MMA ad on this is a NEW sport in its own right.

True, but in the 1960s, jai alai organizers thought their sport would be bigger than baseball, but which sport had their big opening day last week? Still, good luck to UCMMA and UltimateBall. Chaos can be fun to watch.

Dana White ‘Not a Fan at All’ of Alistair Overeem Following Commission Ruling

Radio show host Jim Rome had the dubious honor yesterday of informing UFC President Dana White of the Nevada State Athletic Commission's denial of a license for heavyweight Alistair Overeem and their ruling that he would not be allowed to reapply for nine months. White responded by saying he assumed Overeem would have gotten a more severe punishment and that he is unsure if Alistair will still have a job with the UFC. "I thought he would get a year. Easily a year," White said. "I'm not a fan at all. You're not going to hear me today on your radio show defending Alistair Overeem. Believe me." Luckily for Alistair, White has brought back plenty of guys who have failed drug tests or otherwise violated the law. Hell, Alistair has already failed a drug test so he might be a felony away from receiving a title shot when and if he returns. But for Overeem to blow it so epically when so much was on the line? That might be unforgivable. "I know he lied to me," White told Rome. "I don't like it...if they'll sit in front of you and lie to your face, [they're] not the kind of guys I want to do business with." Check out audio from Rome's interview with Uncle Dana after the jump.

Dan Henderson beats up Cung Le — in a movie (VIDEO)

Dan Henderson and Cung Le both have long fight careers, but they've never faced each other. The movie "Dragon Eyes" changed that, as Hendo got his licks in against Le. Skip to the 1:25 mark to miss the dubbed-over dialogue and see Hendo do his thing.

Dragon Eyes also stars Jean Claude Van Damme and Peter Weller. Apparently, Le's character gets to save the world. From IMDB:

In St. Jude, drug dealers and corrupt cops have destroyed an urban neighborhood. But newcomer, Hong, has the fighting skills and moral vision to save this town from itself.

He is the man who will fight for your honor. Wait, that's a different movie. Dragon Eyes comes out May 12.

Phil Baroni Would Prefer if Every Fighter Took Steroids and Tried to Kill Each Other

(If it weren't for Lou Ferrigno, Phil would've never had to deal with this MMA drug testing bullshit.)  Phil Baroni has never been afraid to speak his mind. Whether he's dishing on pre-fight abstinence, the fragility of his own mind, or childhood obesity, "The New York Bad Ass" never pulls any punches, and in fact it's one of the many reasons we love the guy. So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that, during a recent interview with Fight Sport Asia, Baroni not only came out as a proponent of steroid use in MMA, but more or less admitted that most of his PRIDE cohorts were probably juiced during the Japanese promotion's heyday. Here's what he told the publication:
I want to see the best fighters, I want to see who is the strongest the best! Guys should be able to do whatever it takes to be the strongest. Getting choked and kicked in the head is really bad for you, worse than pot , TRT, or steroids. I don't care who's the cleanest, I wanna' see the strongest, the fastest and the most gnarly fighters. I don't want to see who is the best at passing drug test. Overeem isn't the only guy taking shit, he just got caught. I wanna' see the baddest mother fuckers going at it. That's why PRIDE was the best -- I wanna see a 205 (ripped) Wanderlei Silva kill dudes!
Most of you will not likely find this revelation to be all that surprising considering, you know, the above photo of Baroni. It does, however, seem a little inconsistent of Baroni to be advocating a substance that he has vehemently denied using in the past, despite testing positive for Boldenone and Stanozolol Metabolites in the aftermath of his second round submission loss to Frank Shamrock back in 2007. Unfortunately for guys like Baroni and Alistair Overeem, the various athletic commissions regulating the sport don't seem to agree, as Baroni was suspended for six months for his infraction. And we all know what fate Alistair was sentenced to.
