A Look at the Lightweights of Bellator 62

Two weeks into Bellator Season 6 and yours truly is six of eight when it comes to picking the first-round fights. Nothing spectacular I suppose, but that sort of success rate is pretty decent when it comes to the sport of MMA, and if you’re the betting type it’ll likely net you some money. So [...]

Iraq vet uses rear naked choke to stop robbery

You walk into a store and see someone holding up the cashier. What do you do? If you're Zack Thome, an Iraq vet and someone who has trained in MMA, you slap a rear naked choke on the offender and choke him out.

Original Video- More videos at TinyPic

Thome held Brandon Slanger, the suspect who is said to be schizophrenic, down as someone else called the police. Thome said he lives near the store and didn't want to see the cashier hurt.

"It's kind of my hometown.  I live right next to the place, you know, I'm in there everyday.  I think if it was the other way around, if I worked there and the guy at the register was there, he would have done the same thing," said Thome.

Kudos to Thome for using his MMA training to good use. But unless you've actually trained, don't try this at home, folks. Watching every UFC pay-per-view doesn't count.

Gracias, Cage Potato.

Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald promoted to UFC 145 main card, six fights now on pay-per-view

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Miguel_Torres_180_4.jpeg
Next month's UFC 145 event in Atlanta, Georgia isn't the UFC's most stacked event. In fact, it's very clearly a one-fight card, with the massive main event between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans taking over everything. However, while the rest of the card is lacking in name value, the UFC is going to try to make it well worth the time of their pay-per-view buyers.

The organization announced on Thursday that they have promoted the bantamweight bout between Miguel Torres and Michael McDonald to the night's main card, making it a six-fight pay-per-view card.

The bout joins the Jones-Evans fight, as well as Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills, Brendan Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell, Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin, and Mark Bocek vs. Matt Wiman to round out the pay-per-view card.

The event will take place from Atlanta's Philips Arena, the UFC's first event in the city since September of 2008.

Penick's Analysis: This is as close to a boxing-esque card that the UFC's put on in some time, with only the main event truly being a pay-per-view worthy fight from a name standpoint. There is definitely some solid undercard action here, but there are also a number of much better fights with bigger names coming to free cards in the coming months. Still, a six fight pay-per-view card is fantastic, even though it means they may have to rush some things to fit it into a three-hour window.

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal Released from Strikeforce, Lawal Responds [Updated]

As if the day could not get any worse for Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, it actually has, as he has been released from his contract with Strikeforce by UFC President Dana White. This comes following the announcement of his suspension and fine by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Following the announcement, Lawal went to Twitter to share his feelings on the move, which ended up causing his release from the organization.

WALKER: Top Ten MMA Fighters to Watch in 2012

By: Brad Walker, MMATorch Columnist

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_39.jpg
Well, since so many people have responded positively to my lists in the past, I have decided to try to do one every week so you all can tell me what you think (or at least how much my lists suck). Whether or not you agree with the picks I make does matter to me, your input is what ultimately balances the whole equation out. So here it is, the 10 fighters to watch in 2012 – in my opinion, and why. For some I will also add who I would like to see them fight next, or who they are scheduled to fight next.

10. Pat "HD" Barry – UFC – Heavyweight

In one of my prior columns – the heavyweight stock exchange to be exact – I wrote that Pat was on the brink of dropping to the .500 mark after his fight with Cheick Kongo. Well, Pat does what he gets paid to do and went into the ring with Christian Morecraft and made me look like a clown. He escaped numerous submission attempts, and then landed an incredible knockout win. People often state that because of his size he should be moving down to light heavyweight, but if you look at his very muscular build, that has the same likelihood of happening as Roy Nelson hitting middleweight. It is very clear that the training at Team DeathClutch is molding Pat into much more than just a kick boxer and he has the ability to become the most exciting man in the division.

Next Fight: vs. Lavar Johnson at UFC on Fox 3

9. Pat "Paddy Mike" Curran – Bellator – Featherweight

Yes, it is indeed another Pat, but this time a much smaller one, and he wears a shiny new belt. Pat coming right out in the third round of his championship fight and putting a vicious beating on Joe Warren opened a lot of eyes about how dangerous a man he can truly be. His striking is incredibly powerful, and I would love to see a future for him inside of the UFC cage - but for now he will be staying in Bellator. He has risen to the top in quick fashion, winning tournaments in two weight classes, and finally taking home the belt just a couple of weeks ago. His coming fights will show us if he is capable of maintaining his edge while defending his title, and if he can he will only rise higher within the ranks in the division.

Next Fight: vs. Patricio Pitbull

8. Michael Bisping – UFC – Middleweight

Bisping proved a lot of his doubters to be fools when he made it to the final bell against Chael Sonnen, and made an extremely strong case for the possible victory. It was an incredibly close fight, and now finally Bisping is in the title picture that he has longed to get into. If he continues to fight at the level he did against Sonnen in Chicago, he will find himself standing across the cage from either Sonnen himself, or Anderson Silva – only time will tell. Despite his departure from the Wolfslair MMA academy, I expect to see a better Bisping in each fight moving forward, as he is a very dedicated fighter. The question will be looming though, is he truly capable of finally winning that title he's always wanted?

Next Fight: vs. Tim Boetsch at UFC 148

7. Ryan Jimmo – UFC – Light Heavyweight

Jimmo is among the newest signees in the UFC, and he is a former champion who hasn't lost a fight since his professional debut in 2007. He has equal ability to knock out and submit his opponents, and his game is extremely well rounded. He has beaten a couple of former UFC fighters in his career and I look forward to him finally debuting in the Octagon. He's not the most intimidating guy inside of the cage, but he has an endless amount of talent. I think a great matchup for him would be a guy like Stephan Bonnar or Cyrille Dibiate.

Next Fight: TBA

6. Stefan Struve – UFC – Heavyweight

The "Sky-Scraper" has been on an absolute roll over the past year, and he is quickly making an argument for a spot in the top 15 fighters in the division. Stacking up a 7-3 record in the UFC, and winning four of his last five, Struve has shown improvement in all areas of his game in the cage. His extremely long limbs make him a very dangerous opponent standing and on the ground – there is no such thing as a safe place in the Octagon with Struve. He submitted Pat Barry and then pounded out Dave Herman, he is still very young and his evolution is very apparent. If he keeps up this level of fighting he will find himself in the top 10 by the end of the year.

Next Fight: vs. Mark Hunt at UFC 146

5. Rousimar Palhares – UFC – Middleweight

Since joining the UFC roster in 2008 Palhares has only lost two fights, to Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt, so the reputation doesn't exactly take a hit with losses to names like that. Palhares has shown that he is an absolute killer with his ground game, and will happily amputate your leg for you if given the chance. Coming off of three consecutive wins, he is standing just outside of the top 10, and with a couple more wins could even find himself in title contention. His submission is some of the best in the division and possibly the world, but we are yet to see him master his striking to set up the jiu-jitsu opportunities. If he stays on track I expect to see him across the cage from Anderson Silva before too long.

Next Fight: vs. Alan Belcher at UFC on Fox 3

4. Jake Shields – UFC – Middleweight

Shields, having just announced his planned return to middleweight, has excited many to see him return to his former stomping grounds. He has taken apart some of the best in the division at 185 and will look to do the same once he returns to it. He has taken a couple of hard losses since joining the UFC, but I have no doubt he will bounce back. Moving back up was the right move and it really makes for a much more exciting future than he would have at 170; perhaps he will make it to a fight with Anderson Silva, perhaps not, but he will fare much better at his comfortable weight. He took out at least one great fighter while at 185 in Strikeforce, now I expect him to do the same in the UFC.

Next Fight: TBA

3. Johny Hendricks – UFC - Welterweight

There is not a whole lot to say about Hendricks that isn't absolutely obvious, he has heavy hands, and he knows how to use them. His astoundingly fast knockout of John Fitch garnered him a lot of unexpected attention, and shocked many fight fans around the world. If he can repeat his victory a couple of times he will be the next guy in line for GSP or Condit. His heavy hands are the most powerful in the division and right now he can give anyone at 170 a run for their money inside of the cage. He's already generally ranked as a top five fighter; he can easily climb the ladder in the next few months.

Next Fight: vs. Josh Koscheck at UFC on Fox 3

2. Nate Diaz – UFC – Lightweight

Nate Diaz has racked up two consecutive big wins inside of the Octagon against Donald Cerrone and Takanori Gomi. His ability to get inside of his opponents heads and make them fall into his game plan is an asset most fighters don't have. Once you mix in his striking and cardio you have one of the best rounded fighters in the division. I expect Nate to only grow from his last fight with Cerrone and be in line for a title shot inside of the next six months. He's an exciting fighter and one you can love to hate at the same time, which makes him very important in Dana White's sales strategies.

Next Fight: vs. Jim Miller at UFC on Fox 3

1. Glover Teixeira – UFC – Light Heavyweight

Yeah, I know right now the rest of the torch staff are preparing punch lines for me on twitter, but I'm writing this anyway. Now that he has entered the elite ranks of the UFC, Glover is going to show the world what he is made of. His heavy hands and well-rounded game make him a threat to anyone at 205, and did I forget to mention he trains out of The Pit with Chuck Liddell and John Hackleman? His game is already very evolved, and with the extreme step up in competition I expect to see his metamorphosis continue. He is an extremely underrated and very talented fighter, so his entrance into the UFC should show us one way or the other what he is capable of doing.

Next Fight: vs. Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 146

Tony Ferguson now meets Michael Johnson at UFC on Fox 3

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Ultimate Fighter season 13 winner Tony Ferguson has another new opponent for May's UFC on Fox 3 card, as Thiago Tavares has suffered an injury.

Tavares had been tapped for an injured Dennis Hallman, but now TUF 12 runner-up Michael Johnson will step in for him to take on Ferguson.

Johnson picked up his second win in the UFC this January, taking a decision off WEC vet Shane Roller at UFC on Fox 2. Ferguson is undefeated in the UFC at 3-0 following his most recent win over Yves Edwards at the TUF 14 Finale in December.

UFC 146 heavyweights tested for drug use after promotional presser

Nick Diaz’s attorney doesn’t take kindly to calling his client a liar

Nick Diaz's disciplinary hearing in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission for allegedly failing a post-fight drug screen after his loss to Carlos Condit on Feb. 4 in Las Vegas at UFC 143 figures to be a doozy.

The hearing isn't scheduled yet, though it's expected to be sometime next month. If things remain as contentious as they have been between Diaz's attorney Ross Goodman and the commission this week, tickets are going to be harder to come by than those for the Final Four.

Goodman has taken an aggressive stance and asserts that Diaz has not tested positive for a banned substance. Goodman argues that Diaz did not test positive for Delta-9-THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, but rather for marijuana metabolites. Those metabolites are an inactive ingredient in marijuana and are not on the World Anti Doping Agency's banned list that Nevada uses, Goodman said.

Goodman is clearly going to fight the case bitterly, and on Thursday, he railed against statements made by the public information officer for the Nevada attorney general's office.

Yahoo! Sports on Monday and Tuesday reached out to Christopher Eccles, the Nevada deputy attorney general who represents the athletic commission, seeking comment on points Goodman raised. Under a new policy instituted by attorney general Catherine Cortez Masto, however, her deputies are not allowed to speak to the media as they have in the past.

As a result, public information officer Jennifer M. Lopez returned the call for Eccles and later released a statement. Via email, Lopez said, "Not only did Nick Diaz violate the law by testing positive for marijuana metabolites, but he also lied to the Commission on his Pre-Fight Questionnaire when he swore that he had not used any prescribed medications in two weeks before the fight."

It is unusual for a spokesperson for an attorney general's office to call a person who will soon have a hearing in front of a state regulatory agency a liar.

Her statement probably wouldn't have been given much notice, though, had she said Diaz must have been mistaken when he checked no to a question asking if he'd taken any prescription medications in the preceding two weeks prior to the Feb. 3 weigh-in.

But saying outright that Diaz lied put Goodman even more in attack mode. He came out swinging on Thursday and insisted that Diaz did not lie when he checked no when he said he had not taken any prescription medications in the preceding two weeks.

The Nevada law that deals with medical marijuana doesn't regard it as a prescription drug. No doctor is able to prescribe it because it is a controlled substance.

Chapter 453A.210 of the Nevada Revised Statutes lays out the requirements to obtain a registry card for medical marijuana. To get the card, patients must comply with the following regulations:

(1) The person has been diagnosed with a chronic or debilitating medical condition;
(2) The medical use of marijuana may mitigate the symptoms or effects of that condition; and
(3) The attending physician has explained the possible risks and benefits of the medical use of marijuana;
(b) The name, address, telephone number, social security number and date of birth of the person;
(c) Proof satisfactory to the Division that the person is a resident of this State;
(d) The name, address and telephone number of the person's attending physician; and
(e) If the person elects to designate a primary caregiver at the time of application:
(1) The name, address, telephone number and social security number of the designated primary caregiver; and
(2) A written, signed statement from the person's attending physician in which the attending physician approves of the designation of the primary caregiver.

"Nowhere in there does it say that the attending physician is prescribing marijuana," Goodman said. "And so, for obvious reasons, before you speak and call someone a liar, you think you'd do a little bit of due diligence and understand what the Nevada law actually says."

Diaz manager Cesar Gracie said in a 2009 interview with MMA Fighting that "Nick has a prescription for marijuana in California. He has had a prescription for the last couple years, so it's a legal drug for him. He has the prescription for ADHD [Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder], and he says it helps him."

But Goodman said it is all irrelevant. He said no reasonable person regards marijuana as either a prescription drug or an over the counter medication.

"It's not like you walk into the pharmacy and start looking around on the shelves and hope to pick up a bag of marijuana," Goodman said. "That's ridiculous. No reasonable person would believe that medical marijuana falls under the category of over the counter medications."

Curiously, though, in his response to the commission, Goodman himself made a big deal about a prescription. He referenced NRS 484C.210, which deals with prohibited substances. Goodman bolded a section which said "if the person who uses the substance has not been issued a valid prescription ... "

Diaz may ultimately be forced to accept a lengthy suspension. He was suspended for six months in Nevada in 2007 for failing a marijuana test. On Jan. 31, boxer Matt Vanda had a hearing after testing positive for a second time. Vanda was suspended for a year and fined 40 percent of his purse.

If Diaz goes down, though, he's not going to make it simple on the commission. This isn't going to be a case where the fighter hangs his or her head, is lectured to by the commissioners and then apologizes profusely and meekly accepts the punishment issued.

Goodman will make certain of that.

Phil Davis on UFC on Fox 2 loss to Rashad Evans - "I'm glad he poked holes in my game"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DavisPhil_GG180_1.jpg
Phil Davis took a massive leap up in competition when he returned to action this January, taking on former Champion and number one contender Rashad Evans at UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago. Through five rounds in that night's main event, Davis was kept completely off his game and fairly ineffective throughout, leading to a unanimous decision loss.

That defeat was the first of his career, snapping a nine-fight winning streak that began in his MMA debut back in 2008. Still, while the loss sets him back in the line at 205 lbs. in the UFC, Davis is looking on the defeat as a a positive moment in his development as a fighter.

"I'm glad he poked holes in my game," Davis said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "Because now I can fix some of those holes and know where the No. 2 guy in the world is going to beat me. Now I have a benchmark. Losing is not the worst thing in the world. The worst thing in the world is not getting better. I'm glad I got that fight. I'm glad I got it twice, and I'm just real excited about where I'm at in my career."

Davis is taking a bit of time off from the cage, but is staying active with the UFC as he helps teammate Dominick Cruz in coaching on The Ultimate Fighter. He continues to try to improve upon things he feels Evans exposed in January, and hopes to come back much stronger when he does return to the cage.

"I'm taking it day by day," he said. "The last thing I want is to give an incomplete performance. My next performance I want everyone to go, 'Wow, yes, this guy is for real.'"

Penick's Analysis: The fight with Evans was simply too soon for Davis. The fact that he had racked up nine straight wins, and had defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, had far too many putting him in the same category as Jon Jones as a immensely fast rising prospect. He's still a very good fighter, but his MMA skills haven't progressed at the same exponential rate that we saw out of Jones. Being booked in the fight with Evans was a losing proposition from the get go, and that was made all the more apparent with how the fight played out in January. Now that he's suffered this first loss, he should be brought back up the ladder at a more reasonable pace, as he's wholly capable of developing into a title-worthy talent. He's just not there quite yet.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos Releases Statement on Positive Test (Video)

Former Strikeforce featherweight champion recently released a video regarding her positive test following Strikeforce: Masvidal vs. Melendez. Santos was stripped of her title following a positive test for stanozolol after the event. While Santos says she ingested the drug by mistake, she also acknowledged that it was her fault for not knowing the supplement contained a banned substance. Santos warned others to be careful what they take without a doctor's approval.

UFC, eh? UFC will head to Canada three times in 2012

Mark your calendars, Canadian fans. The UFC announced today they will visit the home and native land of welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre three times in the remainder of 2012.

They will start in Calgary on July 21, where Jose Aldo will fight a yet-to-be-named fighter. After that, it's UFC 152 in Toronto Sept. 22, and UFC 154 in Montreal Nov. 17. St. Pierre, who was present at the press conference, announced the Montreal date.

GSP also gave an update on his health, saying he is progressing smoothly and is hoping to be back by November.

"When you get an injury like I have and you're off for a long period of time, the only thing you wish is to get back fast as possible," he said. "I don't know if it will be in the U.S. or Canada, but I wish and I pray that I have a chance to perform in 2012. No matter where it will be, I want to come back and fight in 2012."

St. Pierre is a native of Montreal, and has enjoyed great success when fighting in front of the rabid home crowd Canada can provide. His last two fights were won in Canada, and he exacted revenge on Matt Serra, one of the few men to beat him, in Montreal.

Though he isn't likely to rush his recovery from an ACL tear, he also has plenty of motivation to be ready to go on Nov. 17.

Dana White talks after UFC 137 "I Will Never Trust Nick Diaz Again" - Dana White

Nick Diaz was a no-show at the UFC 137 press conference in Las Vegas - just like he was a no-show at the press conference in Toronto the day before. Dana White decided enough is enough and axed him from the card, giving Carlos Condit the title shot in his place. In this interview with MMA:30's Dave Farra; Dana White talks about the trust lost, why he thinks he'll never heard from Diaz again, and touches on Overreem vs. Lesnar and the UFC's return to Japan. Anthony Johnson Set for Titan FC 22 in May

Excommunicated UFC welterweight Anthony Johnson has lined up his first fight outside of the octagon, with reports having the 28-year-old slated to next face fellow UFC castoff Dave Branch in what will presumably be a middleweight tilt under the Titan FC banner. Johnson hasn't appeared in action since badly missing weight for his 185lbs debut, being submitted in that fight by Vitor Belfort and subsequently getting cut from the UFC.

Mackens Semerzier released from the UFC following UFC on FX 2 loss

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_36.jpg
Featherweight Mackens Semerzier has been released from the UFC following his most recent loss at UFC on FX 2 in Australia. Semerzier revealed the release to Mauro Ranallo on The MMA Show."

"Yeah, I got cut,” Semerzier said. “I gotta get hot again and earn my spot again.”

Semerzier made a big splash in his Zuffa debut back in 2009 in the WEC, submitting highly regarded submission specialist Wagnney Fabiano with a triangle choke. However, Semerzier was unable to put together much success for the rest of his run, losing three straight fights in the WEC and winning just one of three appearances inside the Octagon.

The most recent loss came when he got caught in a triangle choke by Daniel Pineda, which was turned quickly into an armbar that forced him to tap.

Penick's Analysis: I've always really liked watching Semerzier fight, but unfortunately he just couldn't put together the results to go along with his talent. He lost a couple of tough decisions in the WEC, including in his final fight against Cub Swanson in a fight I though he won. He had a good win against Alex Caceres, and then the unfortunate headbutt ending to his fight with Robert Peralta, but four losses in six fights makes it so the UFC isn't likely to retain your services. It's unfortunate for sure, but not entirely unexpected.

The latest from ‘Rampage:’ good-bye UFC, hello rap career

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson took to Twitter and HDNet's "Inside MMA" to make his case for the UFC to let him go so he can fight elsewhere, or not fight at all. Last week, Jackson called the UFC  "U fight cheap." Now he says it's not about the money. It's all about the love.

First, he spoke up on Twitter. "I'm not complaining about money, cause I'm about 2 make a lot less money now,but at least the people I fight 4 will appreciate what I do 4 mma."

See? He just wants someone to say thank you. He later added in the HDNet interview:

"The UFC talks about being in a billion homes. They're making all this money. Yet I'm making less money than I used to make with the UFC. The UFC is getting bigger, which means I'm getting bigger, but I'm making less money. Why?"

So it might be a little bit about money. He also is not happy with matchmaking, and wanted to throw some violence UFC matchmaker Joe Silva's way.

"I think (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva needs to be slapped in the face," he said. "I'm sorry, (but) you've got a fighter like me who likes to go out there and fight fights, so why do you keep giving me wrestlers who are going to take me down and hump me?"

Four of Jackson's last five opponents wrestled collegiately. He lost three of those fights.

But not all is bad in Jackson's world. He tweeted that he is going to put out some of his own music soon. Cage Potato found footage of him singing rapping in a Japanese nightclub. It's only 20 seconds long, but it does manage to have NSFW language.

It's no "SUPA FIGHT LEEEEEG." Perhaps fighting is the better career path for Jackson.

All-heavyweight main card set for UFC 146 includes five bouts and 2,500 pounds of heavyweights

Dana White is a great promoter because after listening to him talk for just a brief while, he can make even a so-so bout sound like the next Fight of the Century.

The UFC president says a fight is "big, it's [expletive] huge," so often, he ought to consider trademarking the phrase.

But on May 26 at UFC 146 at the MGM Grand, it won't be hyperbole when White calls the card "big" and "[expletive] huge."

For the first time in UFC history, the main card will consist of five heavyweight bouts, putting about a ton-and-a-quarter of heavyweights into the cage in a three-hour span. UFC 28 featured four heavyweight bouts, but White was able to top it for UFC 146 when he finalized a bout between Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt that is expected to open the pay-per-view broadcast.

Also on the main card on the show will be Shane del Rosario against Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio "Big Foot" Silva against Roy "Big Country" Nelson, former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez against "Fracturing" Frank Mir and, in the main event, a title bout between champion Junior dos Santos against No. 1 challenger Alistair Overeem.

Heavyweights have long been the most popular division in combat sports and the heavyweight champion is often regarded as the so-called "baddest man on the planet."

These 10 heavyweights average 6 feet 3 inches and 253 pounds. Most interesting, though, is that they have combined for a 162-51 record, and have 144 finishes among those 162 victories, according to records from Sherdog. They've combined for 83 knockouts and 61 submissions.

Of their 51 losses, they've been finished 35 times. That means that of their combined 213 fights, the bouts have been finished 179 times, or in 84 percent of the fights.

The group includes the reigning UFC heavyweight champion (dos Santos), two former UFC champions (Mir and Velasquez), a Strikeforce champ (Overeem) and a former International Fight League champion (Nelson).

Tickets go on sale for the show at the MGM Grand box office on March 30.

MMA Marketplace: A tiny championship belt for your little fighter doll

If one of your MMA dolls, erm, action figures has proven himself to be better than the rest, doesn't he deserve a championship belt? You're in luck. There is an Etsy store that can help you with that.

When one of your action figures wins the belt, all the other ones will yell, "I want my belt back!" or "I want B.J.'s belt!" They may even get on their knees to beg you for a title shot, but at some point you will have to make hard decisions on which doll gets the next chance to win the title.

Or, since they cost just $3, you can just buy a belt for every doll.
